Photographing the Sydney Opera House

During my recent trip to Australia, I photographed the dramatic and unforgettable Sydney Opera House. Since its completion in 1973, the Sydney Opera House has become Australia's most recognizable building and has attracted worldwide acclaim for its design and construction. Located at the end of Bennelong Point, it is the focal point of Sydney Harbor and can be seen and experienced from all sides.  It took 16 years to build and is a masterpiece of modern architectural design, engineering and construction technology exhibiting the creative genius of its designer, the Pritzker Prize winner Danish architect Jorn Utzon. The sculptural building with its soaring white roof shell shaped sails sits atop a red granite platform influenced by Utzon's experience of Mayan architecture in Mexico. It was his intention to create a sculptural form that would relate as naturally to the harbor as the sails of its yachts. The Sydney Opera House includes a concert hall, opera and drama theaters, a playhouse and a studio. It is truly a magnificent sight to behold.

Interior Design & Fine Art Photography

I recently had the pleasure of photographing a Stamford, Connecticut home styled by interior designer and artist Nga Nguyen. Her interior design styling and art reflects the Asian culture of her birthplace  - Vietnam.

IMG_5784.jpg

Nga draws on traditional Asian themes. Her pieces work with the entire room. Everything seamlessly flows together.

Nga works in lacquer, also sometimes called by its Japanese name urushi. This resinous material is made from the sap of a deciduous tree common to East Asian countries. The lacquer forms a hard, clear veneer over Nga's brightly colored paintings that are inspired by nature. Her work usually takes the form of folding screens that can be hung as wall decorations or used as room dividers.

Nga sells lacquer jewelry boxes, paintings and painted furniture from her studio, Asia by Design in Weston, Connecticut.

Fine Art Photography

Getting up close and personal with an early 20th century piece of artwork during a photo shoot for a client in Granite Studios, Westport, CT. Photograph of the "Little Barn" in Westport, CT

Barry A. Hyman shares a cozy winter scene of the brand new “Little Barn”. Formerly Swanky Franks for years and before that a Dairy Queen, this casual pub recently opened its doors at 1050 Post Road East in Westport, CT.  The interior is wrapped in reclaimed red barn siding, with a warm and cozy inviting two-sided stone fireplace. For the summer months there are big sliding doors that open to an outside patio. Vintage black-and-white photos adorn the walls, and a hostess station is fashioned from an old tractor grill.

Bikes in New York City

Professional photographer Barry A. Hyman shot this photograph of a fleet of Citi Bikes. Citi Bikes is New York City's bike sharing system that provides New Yorkers and visitors with an additional transportation option for getting around the city. The bikes are locked into a network of docking stations sited at regular intervals around a city. The bikes can be rented from and then returned to any station in the system, creating an efficient network with many possible points and combinations of departure and arrival. There are thousands of bikes at hundreds of stations available for use 24 hours a day, all year 'round.
